Our Horses

Success in the affairs of life often serves to hide one’s abilities, whereas adversity frequently gives one an opportunity to discover them.Horace

The Herd – All our horses seem to understand the importance of their jobs. Not all horses have the mindset for this difficult work and because of that, all prospective mounts undergo an extensive evaluation process to determine who has the temperament and skills that meet our strict criteria. In addition of assessing the horse’s overall soundness, our volunteers act as riders and put horses thru the paces of gaits as well as performance in areas such as quick unexpected dismounts, sensitivity to sound, motion and touch. In addition to the standard walk/trot horses, flat-shod Tennessee Walking Horses are also used because of their special gait. Like any other working horse, we give them needed diversions and R&R time to keep them happy and challenged.

Here are some of our faithful mounts:

Abe-A 20 yr old morgan gelding donated by Helen Husher and who stepped in to fill Topper’s horse shoes when he passed. He has done a wonderful job and is loved by all who work with him.

Apollo and Luna, a brother and sister team of Cleveland Bay/Standardbred crosses were donated by Mr. and Mrs. Gene Sevi for our new Adaptive driving program, but they work individually with participants under saddle as well. Apollo is 23, Luna 21.

Ellie May-18 year old paint mare, even tempered and tolerant of all the activities that occur in a session.

Grace-is an 15 year old TWH mare who was born at Water Tower Farm, sold as a 3 year old and has made her way back home. She is one of Dianne’s personal horses, loves the trail, is awesome with all levels of riders and has that unique patience to help riders with disabilities achieve a thrilling experience of freedom in motion. She has been a parade horse, a wonderful mother to her one foal, and everyone’s sweetheart.

Max – Max is a 16+ h 20 year old quarter horse owned by Jessie Leyse and loaned to us for our larger riders, he has been a great help in giving Sassy our other big quarter horse some time off. He is quickly learning the new skills he needs to have to be a steady therapy horse.

Sassy – a 20 + yr old palomino quarter horse purchased by one of our boarders who has let us use her for some of our lessons and she has become a very capable addition, Her size is a big asset for our larger riders.

Shadow is a 30 yr old Tennessee Walking Horse owned by Peggy Ferris who is retired, but he has a special job with one of our tiniest riders. He is thrilled to see her come each week and you can tell he is happy to have such a meaningful purpose in his retirement years.
